Curling's hole-in-one was scored in this morning's action at the 2012 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship at the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass. In traditional curling, an eight-ender is the maximum you can score and as perfect - and rare - as golf's hole in one in championship action. In mixed doubles, it is six points and still rather rare. New York's team of Danielle Buchbinder and Michael Rupp (both of Buffalo, N.Y.) joined that exclusive club.

Buchbinder and Rupp hung six on the scoreboard, in the sixth end no less, in this morning's action against Seattle's Miyo Konno and Steve Lundeen. Konno and Lundeen know what it feels like to score six as the duo did it at the 2009 championship against clubmates Brady and Cristin Clark, who ironically were the first team to ever score six in a mixed doubles championship in the event's inaugural year.

With two more rounds in the books, the field is starting to separate at the 2012 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship at the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass.

Five teams remain undefeated with the round robin set to wrap up Saturday night. The top two teams in each of the three pools will move on to the playoffs. Helping their cause in the 11 a.m. draw today, Seattle's Jake Vukich and Em Good improved to 3-0 with a lopsided 11-1 victory over Dan Metcalf (New Market, Minn.) and Brigid Ellig (Hopkins, Minn.). The siblings scored nine unanswered points over the first three ends in the shortened match.

Several new teams to the U.S. mixed doubles scene are making their marks early as day two of the 2012 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship got underway this morning at the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass.

In 8 a.m. action, New York's team of Danielle Buchbinder and Michael Rupp (both of Buffalo, N.Y.), playing in their first U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship, scored two points in overtime to defeat Seattle's Andrew Ernst and Jennifer Westhagen, 9-7. The win evened the record for the New York duo at 1-1. Buchbinder and Rupp fell behind after Ernst and Westhagen scored four points in the fourth end to take a 6-4 advantage. Three consecutive ends of singles gave the lead back to Buchbinder and Rupp, who scored one more in the extra end.

As action kicked off at the 2012 USA Curling Mixed Doubles National Championship tonight at the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, Mass., the odds seem relatively high that either a team from the home club or Seattle's Granite Curling Club could become Team USA.

Of the competing 21 teams of two, 13 athletes made the cross-country journey from Seattle while a dozen or so call Broomstones their home club. Teams are competing in a five-day tournament to determine Team USA for the 2012 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Turkey in April. This is the fifth installment of curling's newest discipline, which features a lot of stones in play but not as much sweeping.
