Team USA returned to its winning ways at the 2013 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick, as Peter and Maureen Stolt defeated France this afternoon in the round robin, 10-3.

The American husband-wife duo from Plymouth, Minn., has two must-win games left on the schedule to have a shot at making their first playoff appearance at the event.

"It was a pretty important game. Last night wasn't the best so getting back on the ice and getting focused was the plan. We're still trying to get to play as we can," said Maureen Stolt, 34, who works as a business process consultant with Target Corp. "The biggest thing for us is to just get in the zone and focus and pull out these next two games. We're trying to put our blinders on. I like to be mentally tough and that's something I've struggled with this week."

The U.S. needs to win its final two games and get a little help as well. They need one of the three teams above them in the standings (Austria, Czech Republic or New Zealand) to lose both of their final games to force a tiebreaker match.

Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) and teammates Norma O'Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.), and Lucy DeVore (Superior, Wis.) had a chance to win the game in the eighth end but Smith's final draw game up short and the game went into overtime with Japan's Mikiko Tsuchiya rink prevailing.

"We weren't getting the hit and rolls ... we didn't play very well. We just need to pick it up a notch," Smith said after the game.

Margie Smith and the U.S. ladies remain perfect at the 2013 World Senior Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Smith (St. Paul, Minn.) and teammates Norma O'Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.), Lucy DeVore (Superior, Wis.), and Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) defeated Russia's Larisa Pismenova rink, 14-2, to improve to 2-0 in the round robin standings.

"That's the key, to keep your focus. It is an unconventional way to play, and it kind of plays with your mind a little bit," said Smith, who is skipping Team USA for the second time at this event. "You just have to go out and play your shots. But we accomplished what we wanted to accomplish today. It's hard to go out and play your best game against a team like that, but the girls played really well. They shot a lot better than I did, but every once in a while that happens. Somebody has to hold you up and that's what they did."

Margie Smith and the American ladies are on a mission to the medal stand and got off to a positive start to the round robin with a win over Ireland this afternoon at the 2013 World Senior Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

The U.S. women had the bye yesterday and had to wait an extra day to take the ice to compete at the Grant Harvey Centre. Smith and teammates Norma O'Leary (Silver Bay, Minn.), Debbie Dexter (St. Paul, Minn.) and Shelly Kosal (Edgerton, Wis.) scored five points in the opening end and never looked back in defeating the Marie O'Kane rink (0-2), 11-2.

"It's hard to come and sit and wait, but the girls came out firing and it was good. It's always nice to start with a five (ender)," Smith said. "The ice was great, brilliant, fun. It has good speed, seems to work both ways. The beauty of it is we're both playing on the same sheet."

After scoring the five points in the opening end, the offense didn't slow down much for the American women (1-0). After holding the Irish ladies to a single in the second end, Team USA scored three points in the third and stole three more points over the next two ends to build an 11-1 lead. After Ireland could only score another single, the game was out of reach.

The 2013 World Mixed Doubles Championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick, hasn't gotten off to the start USA's Peter and Maureen Stolt have dreamed of.

The American husband-wife team lost to Australia's Lyn Gill and Jay Merchant, 7-6, this afternoon to slip to 0-2 in the round robin at the Grant Harvey Centre.

"We're still not as sharp as we'd like to be; that's probably the most disappointing thing right now," Maureen Stolt said. "But we'll fight back. We dug ourselves a little bit of a hole now, but there are a lot of games left to play and we just have to keep picking it up every game."
