Swiss send USA to 6th loss

April 4, 2012
It was déjà vu for Team USA again as an early lead did not equate to a win as the Americans lost to the host Swiss team this afternoon at the 2012 Men's World Championship at St. Jakobshalle.

USA's offense continues to be patterned after Swiss cheese as inconsistent shot-making doomed the American men against Switzerland's Jan Hauser rink. The team as a whole is shooting 74 percent for the week, which is last place in the 12-team field. Today's 7-5 loss drops Heath McCormick (Sarnia, Ontario) and teammates Bill Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), Martin Sather (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) and Dean Gemmell (Short Hills, N.J.) to 2-6 in the round robin with three games remaining.

With the door to the playoffs now completely closed, the Americans will be playing for pride and 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualifying points from here on out. (Nations qualify for the 2014 Olympic Games based on accumulated points from the 2012 and 2013 world championships with one last opportunity in a Challenge Event two months before the Olympic Games).

"It's been a frustrating week, that's for sure, but hopefully we can pick up some wins here and represent our country well and get some more points and see what that gets us," Gemmell said.
