Two Americans have been appointed to the inaugural World Curling Federation (WCF) Athlete Commission and the first Competitions and Rules Commission, the WCF announced today.

Mark Swandby (Madison, Wis.), a past president of the United States Curling Association (USCA) and current board member and WCF representative, has been nominated to the Competition and Rules Commission. Ann Swisshelm (Chicago), reigning U.S. women's national champion and USCA board member, has been appointed to the WCF Athlete Commission.

"We are very proud to have Mark and Ann represent the United States on these vital WCF commissions," said Rick Patzke, chief operating officer for USA Curling. "Having worked with them both for many years, I am confident that they will have a great impact while serving in these posts."

2014 Olympic Winter Games Pin Design Contest

Are you creative? Do you have an artistic flair? How would you like to have your design chosen as USA Curling's logo pin for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games being held in Sochi, Russia? Contest is open to any USCA individual member. All ideas must be received at the USA Curling office by no later than July 1, 2013.

Design requirements:

  • Limited to 4 colors
  • Must have the words "2014 US Olympic Team-Curling"
  • Must have USA Curling Logo - Must have Olympic rings - Optional word "Sochi"
  • Must be no larger than 1.5" in scale
  • Must be submitted as a PDF, JPEG or EPS file
  • Must include a short narrative explaining what is symbolized in the design
  • Winner to receive a framed color drawing of final design along with 5 pins
  • Selected design may be modified for production purposes and for approval from U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC)
  • This contest is not endorsed by the USOC

The 2013 World Senior Championships and 2013 World Mixed Doubles Championship are underway in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The U.S. senior teams are skipped by Margie Smith and Gert Messing while the U.S. mixed doubles team is Peter Stolt & Maureen Stolt. Live webstreaming of the mixed doubles is being produced by the WCF. USA's Dean Gemmell will be part of the on-air commentary team. View the schedule here.

Darwin Curtis Fund Grant Program (2013-14)

The United States Curling Association (USCA) is proud to announce that the organization was selected to administer the Darwin Curtis Fund grant program on behalf of The Chicago Community Trust again for the 2013-14 season. The Darwin Curtis Fund was established to “support and encourage participation by the general public in the sport of curling …” Curling clubs with 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, as well as other 501(c)(3) organizations looking to grow the sport, are encouraged to apply for funding. Grant applications will be accepted in two categories: Growth & Development and Bricks & Mortar. Funding requests can range from $1,000 to $20,000, with a total of $20,000 to be distributed during the 2013-14 grant cycle. Clubs that received grant support during the 2012-13 funding cycle will not be eligible during 2013-14.
