U.S. Men's Update: Carson Clark Chats
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 28, 2014) – We interviewed opposite Carson Clark of the U.S. Men’s National Team last summer during the 2013 FIVB World League and found out about why he names Obi Wan Kenobi as his “most admired person.”

Carson Clark and outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) traveled with their Polish team Transfer Bydgoszcz to Berlin to play two friendly matches against setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii), outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.) and the Berlin Recycling Volleys.
On Feb. 25, Berlin defeated Bydgoszcz, 16-25, 15-25, 25-18, 28-26, 22-20. Muagututia was the only U.S. player to compete in the match and scored nine points. On Feb. 26, Berlin won 25-17, 25-21, 25-17. Touzinsky scored 12 points for Berlin and Shoji added five. Clark scored eight for Bydgoszcz and Muagututia totaled five.
In Poland PlusLiga action, Bydgoszcz fell to AZS Częstochowa on Feb. 21, 18-25, 26-24, 21-25, 29-27, 15-10. Clark led his team with 20 points on 18 attacks, one block and one ace. Muagututia added seven points on six kills and one block.
Kawika Shoji, Scott Touzinsky and the Berlin Recycling Volleys defeated TV Rottenburg on Feb. 22, 25-11, 25-18, 25-16. Touzinsky scored nine points on five attacks, three blocks and one ace. Shoji added three points on one kill, one block and one ace. He set Berlin to a 45.7 kill percent. Berlin will play VfB Friedrichshafen in the final of the DVV Cup on March 2.
In the quarterfinals of the Austrian league playoffs, libero Erik Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii), middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) and their Austrian team Hypo Tirol defeated VBC Weiz, 25-16, 25-16, 26-24. Shoji was credited with 12 receptions, 75 percent positive. Hein scored eight points on six attacks and two blocks.
Outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) and his Russian team Zenit Kazan defeated Ural Ufa, 25-15, 25-15, 25-15 on Feb. 22. Anderson scored five points on four kills and one ace. Middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati) and Dinamo Moscow beat Lokomotiv Kharkov, on Feb. 22, 25-16, 25-23, 25-23. Holt scored seven points on four kills, one block and a match-high two aces.
U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) and St-Nazaire defeated Montpellier, 25-21, 25-17, 14-25, 25-19 on Feb. 22. Troy scored 18 points on 15 attacks and three aces. Middle blocker Futi Tavana (Kalaheo, Hawaii) and Toulouse beat Ajaccio on Feb. 22, 24-26, 25-17, 25-22, 26-28, 15-10. Tavana scored 15 points on nine attacks, five blocks and one ace. Middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Tours lost to Narbonne on Feb. 22, 18-25, 26-24, 25-21, 26-24. Smith scored six points on three kills, two blocks and one ace. Jablonsky started the second set but did not score.
Outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.) helped his Belgium league team Noliko Maaseik to two victories over the past week. On Feb. 19, Maaseik defeated Prefaxis Menen, 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23. Menzel finished with 18 points on 16 kills, one block and one ace. On Feb. 22, Maaseik beat VC Euphony Asse-Lennik, 21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22. Menzel scored 13 points on 13 attacks. U.S. player Jacek Ratajczak (Warsaw, Poland), who plays for Asse-Lennik, scored nine points on five kills, three blocks and one ace.
Setter Donald Suxho (Korce Albania) and his Italian team Diatec Trentino defeated Altotevere Città di Castello on Feb. 23, 24-26, 25-15, 27-25, 20-25, 15-11. Suxho scored two points on two kills and set his team to a 47.3 kill percent.
Middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and his Turkish league team Istanbul BBSK defeated Ziraat Bankasi on Feb. 23, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 25-23. Holmes scored 10 points on six kills and four blocks. Holmes and Istanbul fell in the first match of the semifinals of the CEV Challenge Cup on Feb. 26. Italy’s Andreoli Latina defeated Istanbul, 25-18, 25-13, 25-22. Holmes scored two points with two blocks. The teams play again on March 2 in Turkey.
Middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) and his Chinese league team Tang Dynasty Hotel Shanghai remain undefeated in league on Feb. 22 they defeated Henan, 25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19. Lee finished with 13 points on seven kills, four blocks and two aces.
