Oct 11 U.S. Sitting Teams Win on Day 1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 11, 2013) – The U.S. Men’s and Women’s Sitting Volleyball Teams both won on the first day of competition Friday at the 2013 ParaVolley Pan American Sitting Volleyball Zonal Championships, being held in Edmond, Okla.

The top women’s team and the top two men’s teams at the Pan Am Championships qualify for the 2014 ParaVolley World Championships in Poland. The World Championships are a qualifier for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

On Friday, the U.S. Men’s Team defeated Canada, 25-19, 25-21, 25-14. The U.S. Women’s Team beat Brazil, 26-24, 17-25, 25-15, 25-17.

The U.S. Men led Canada in kills (28-22), blocks (13-10) and aces (4-3).

U.S. Team Captain Eric Duda (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) led all scorers with 14 points on a match-high nine attacks and a match-high five blocks. Edgardo LaForest (San Juan, Puerto Rico) totaled nine points on three attacks, three blocks and a match-high three aces.  J. Dee Marinko (Norman, Okla.) added nine points on eight kills and one ace.

Roderick Green (West Monroe, La.) totaled six points on three kills and three blocks. James Stuck (New Kensington, Penn.) added four points on three kills and one block. Dan Regan (St. Louis, Mo.) totaled three points on two kills and one block.

Libero Hugo Storer (Greensboro, N.C.) was credited with 25 receptions while LaForest added 12.

U.S. Head Coach Bill Hamiter (Bethany, Okla.) started Regan, Duda, Stuck, LaForest, Green and Marinko. Storer played at libero. Benjamin Aman (Portland, Ore.) played as a substitute.

In the women’s match, Brazil led in kills (31-29) and blocks (15-13) while the U.S. led in aces (13-7). Brazil was hurt by 16 service errors and 14 hitting errors while the U.S. had 10 service errors and eight hitting errors.

U.S. Team Captain Katie Holloway (Lake Stevens, Wash.) led the U.S. with 13 points on eight attacks, four blocks and one ace. Heather Erickson (Fayetteville, N.C.) added 12 points on seven kills, one block and four aces.

Kaleo Kanahele (Oklahoma City, Okla.) totaled seven points on one kill, one block and a match-high five aces. Allison Aldrich (Schuyler, Neb.) added seven points on two attacks, three blocks and two aces.

Monique Burkland (Ardmore, Okla.) scored six points on four kills, one block and one ace. Nichole Millage (Champaign, Ill.) totaled five points on four kills and one block. Libero Kari Miller (Washington, D.C.) was credited with three points on three attacks and Michelle Schiffler (Lake Wales, Fla.) had two points on two blocks.

Hamiter started Schiffler, Holloway, Erickson, Burkland, Aldrich and Kanahele. Miller played libero. Millage took over for Schiffler in the first set and started the rest of the match. Bethany Zummo (Dublin, Calif.), Lexi Shifflet (Waseca, Minn.) and Nicky Nieves (Kissimmee, Fla.) played as substitutes.
