Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded seventh in Argentina, won the Shanghai Grand Slam in April. They will play Italy’s No. 3 Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo in Sunday’s semifinals. Latvia’s No. 9 Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins will face Brazil’s No. 4 Bruno Schmidt and Pedro Salgado in the other semifinal.
On the women’s side, April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), seeded No. 2, had their best finish of the season so far in Corrientes as they placed fourth.
Ross and Kessy opened play on Saturday by defeating Spain’s No. 9 Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan (11-21, 21-13, 12-15 in 52 minutes) to advance to the semifinals. However the U.S. pair fell in the semifinals to Brazil’s No. 6 Maria Antonelli and Agatha Bednarczuk (15-21, 21-14, 15-12 in 49 minutes).
In the bronze medal match, Ross and Kessy lost to Brazil’s No. 16 Maria Claria Salgado and Carolina Salgado (21-16, 19-21, 15-13 in 54 minutes).
Meanwhile, Gibb and Patterson opened play on Saturday with a Round 2 victory over Brazil’s No. 2 Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego (24-22, 16-21, 15-12 in 54 minutes). In the third round, Gibb and Patterson topped Brazil’s No. 12 Ricardo Santos and Álvaro Morais Filho (21-17, 21-13 in 36 minutes).
“The Brazilians made a few mistakes and that was enough for us,” Gibb said. “Mistakes happen to all of us on the sand and tonight it was their turn. We still need to clean up a few things in our play, but the important thing is we are improving.”
The gold medal teams in each gender in the FIVB Corrientes Grand Slam will each split $33,000, the silver $22,000, the bronze $16,500 and fourth place $12,900.
