Jun 19 Women's Beach Team Advances at U21 Worlds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 19, 2013) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Alexa Strange (San Clemente, Calif.) and Jace Pardon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) qualified Wednesday for the main draw at the FIVB U21 World Championships in Umag, Croatia.

Strange and Pardon, seeded No. 4 in the qualifying bracket, got a first-round bye and defeated Austria’s No. 5 Nadine Strauss and Teresa Strauss, 21-15, 21-15 in 39 minutes in the second round.

The U.S. men’s team of Skyler McCoy (Lakewood, Calif.) and Austin Rysyk (San Jose, Calif.), who were seeded No. 14 in qualifying, fell in the first round to Czech Republic’s No. 19 Donovan Dzavoronok and Michael Hadrava, 21-18, 21-16 in 37 minutes.

Main draw pool play for both genders will begin on Thursday.

In the women’s bracket, Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Rebecca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif.) are seeded No. 4 and are playing in Pool D. Strange and Pardon are seeded 24th and playing in Pool H.

In the men’s bracket, Chris Long (Tustin, Calif.) and Branden Clemens (Carmel, Ind.) are seeded No. 4 and playing in Pool D.

The semifinals and medal matches for both genders will take place on Sunday (June 21).

Nearly 50 men’s and 40 women’s teams from five continents are competing at the event.
