COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 22, 2010) – USA Volleyball (USAV) has announced that it will host the Second Annual USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, April 17 at Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica, Calif.
The Collegiate Challenge, run in cooperation with the AVP, will have three separate divisions: The Collegiate Division, the Fours Exhibition and the AVP Seniors Division.
The Collegiate Division will be open to current NCAA and NAIA women’s volleyball programs and will mimic the NCAA proposed sand volleyball format, while guaranteeing three to four matches per doubles team. There is no maximum or minimum number of pairs per school. Teams will be seeded according to NCAA rank and results of the 2009 AVP College National Championship and USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge. Entry is $25 per doubles team.
USAV will also offer a Fours Exhibition, for schools that have athletes who would like to participate and get some court time, but are not interested in doubles. Entry is $75 per fours team; roster size is limited to six athletes.
The new AVP Seniors Division is open to female athletes who have exhausted their NCAA or NAIA eligibility with their final playing season being between Fall 2007 and Fall 2009. Teams must be comprised of athletes who played at the same college or university. This will be a separate competition from the Collegiate Division, and teams can enter regardless of their institution’s participation in the Collegiate Division. Entry is $25 per doubles team.
The USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge AVP Seniors Division champion will earn a spot in CBS College Sports Network’s 2010 Alt Games Collegiate Beach Championships on May 1-2 in Santa Barbara, competing for $5,000 in prize money, an automatic bid into the AVP Huntington Beach Open (June 4-6). Athletes will receive a free day of coaching/training from AVP professionals on April 30. Players must pay their own transportation costs, but the AVP will provide one free hotel room for two nights at the AVP hotel. Both players must be from the same school and will represent their school in the draw.
A USAV High Performance Beach Tryout open to all athletes ages 14-25 will be held the following day, Sunday April 18. This is an official USA Volleyball National Team tryout. Collegiate players are eligible to participate during the school year and collegiate institutions may provide actual and necessary expenses related to participation in one tryout. USAV will also host two Collegiate Spring Break Camps on March 24-26 and March 31-April 1 in Long Beach, Calif. These high-intensity sand volleyball training camps are intended for female collegiate volleyball athletes who hope to participate on NCAA and/or USAV sand teams, the AVP tour, and other elite beach programs. Each camp lasts three days and consists of a two-a-day training schedule led by USA Beach coaches Danalee Corso and Jon Aharoni. Athlete to coach ratio will be 8 to 1 or lower. Athletes may register as individuals. Camp tuition is $235 for current USAV members, $250 for non-members. Discounts are available for groups of six or more.
