Coaching Requirements for the 2014 USA Taekwondo National Championships


ALL coaches at the 2014 USA Taekwondo National Championships must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Cleared the USA Taekwondo required background check 
  • Passed the USA Taekwondo Associate Coach quiz
  • Taken the 2014 Coaches Edge webinar or seminar

In addition, coaches for black belt athletes in the Cadet, Junior, and Senior divisions are required to be Level 1 Certified. (Level 1 Certification is not required for coaches who are only coaching color belts, breaking, or black belt Dragon, Ninja, Youth, and/or Ultra divisions).

*Because the winners of the Grassroots black belt tournament become the lowest seed in the World Class tournament, all coaches in Grassroots black belt competitions must meet the World Class standard. 


Meeting the requirements


Background check - estimated time to complete: 1-12 days 

Background checks can be completed upon applying for/renewing your USAT membership. If you have already applied/renewed, please log in to your membership and you will see a link to register for the background check. 

Coaches will not be able to register for the Associate Coach Quiz, Coaches Edge, the Level 1 Seminar, or for a Coach Registration at Nationals until they have cleared the background check. 


Associate Coach Quiz - estimated time to complete: 10 days

The AC quiz only needs to be passed once, and the certification remains active as long as you are a USAT member in good standing. If you have not take and passed the AC quiz, please see our Associate Coach Quiz page. Please allow at least 10 days to process your quiz results.

Coaches will not be able to register for the Coaches Edge webinar, the Level 1 seminar, or for a Coach Registration at Nationals until they have passed the Associate Coach Quiz. 


2014 Coaches Edge - estimated time to complete: 2 hour webinars held weekly starting May 21

The Coaches Edge Webinar/Seminar is an annual refresher for USAT coaches that allows them to ask questions regarding rule changes and technical information, as well as to learn about different topics that will enhance their coaching knowledge. There are 6 webinars held in advance of Nationals, and one seminar that is held at Nationals. For more information, or to register, please see the Coaches Edge page. 


Level 1 Seminar - estimated time to complete: 1 day seminars held four times before July 2

The Level 1 Seminar is required for all coaches who wish to be Level 1 certified. This seminar is a day-long course that is given in a classroom environment, and covers topics such as skill technique & development, scouting, nutritional strategies, and exercises for high-level athlete development. There are currently three seminars available prior to Nationals, and one additional Level 1 seminar being held on July 1 in San Jose. To register, visit our Level 1 Seminar page. 

*Note, if you choose to take the seminar in San Jose, register for Nationals as an Associate Coach and then return to Registration after the course to upgrade your credential to Level 1 Coach.
