Concentrate on Deception and Variation
One noticeable effect of the new 40mm ball is that you get less spin when serving. There are several ways to compensate for this.
First, having less spin doesn’t matter much if the opponent misreads the spin. If a player pushes against a topspin ball, it doesn’t matter if it’s light or heavy topspin, it’s going to pop up or go off the end. So learn to use deception on your serves by changing the direction of your paddle as you contact the ball, using a semi-circular motion.
Second, use more variation. Serve short, long and medium; to both corners and the middle; use all spins; and change the pace of the serve.
Remember that your opponent is in the same situation – he can’t put as much spin on his receives. So there will be less topspin if he loops the serve, and less backspin if he pushes it.
