FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 9, 2008 USA men win gold at 2008 World Juniors (OSTERSUND, Sweden) - The USA men led by Chris Plys of Duluth, Minn., brought home the nation's first world junior men's championship title since 1984 after defeating Sweden, 7-5, Sunday at the 2008 World Junior Championships. Plys (Duluth, Minn.) and teammates Aanders Brorson (Duluth, Minn.), Matt Perushek (Eveleth, Minn.), Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.) and Daniel Plys (Duluth, Minn.) became just the third U.S. junior men's team to win the world championship. Al Edwards team won it in 1984 while Don Barcome Jr.'s team won the nation's first title in 1979. It had been seven years since the U.S. men last won a medal of any type at the World Juniors. And they did it in dominating fashion as they knocked off the home country led by Oskar Erikkson. The U.S. started with a steal of two in the opening end and then scored three in the third end to take a 5-2 lead. Sweden put another point on the scoreboard in the sixth end and stole a single to cut the lead to 5-4. But the U.S. scored a pivotal deuce in the eighth end to put the game away. This was the third straight trip to the World Juniors for Plys, who finished fifth last year and eighth in 2006 in his other attempts at the world title. Plys also won gold at the 2007 World University Games last January. Scotland won its second straight world junior women's title as Eve Muirhead led her team to a dominating 12-3 win over Cicci Ostlund of Sweden. In the bronze-medal matches, Canada won both games. William Dion outlasted Norway, 5-3, while Kaitlyn Lawes rallied to defeat Russia, 9-8.
