Jul 09 Team USA Faces Fierce Competition at the 2013 World University Games

July 09, 2013, 3:30 p.m. (ET)

Head Coach Ray Ng catches us up on the first two days of the team event at the 2013 World University Games:

Day 1:

For our first day of competition, our round robin group included Germany, Japan, and Macau. We played Germany at 10AM first. Michael Buasan and Danae Long started out with mixed doubles, playing some good rallies and close games. Unfortunately, they had a bit more unforced errors than our opponent and they ultimately lost. Our women's singles player, Sharon Ng, and women's doubles pair of Danae Long and Sharon Ng had a good chance to win the WS and WD with both matches stretching to 3 games. But, in the end, the German women adjusted better to the wind draft and took our hard-fought WS and WD matches. The German men were very powerful and fast, giving our men a difficult challenge. With the wind draft and their powerful smashes, the German men took both the MS and MD matches in 2 games. We lost to Germany 0-5.

Next up, without much to eat and rest, we played against Japan at 2PM. The consistency that the Japan players demonstrated was very difficult for our players. But there were some excellent rallies during the matches, especially during their second games where our players were able to rake up more points with our WD even leading at 15 to 12. We lost to Japan 0-5.

The final country we played in the first day was Macau, China at 6PM. Even though our players were all very tired and were even napping on the courts after they played Japan, their fighting spirits were very high and, when the time came to play, they were determined. First off, our mixed double pair of Michael Buasan and Danae Long pulled off a confident win. Then we lost our MS -- Randy Ma was having difficulty adjusting to the wind, hitting a lot of clears out. Next up Sharon Ng, our WS player, pulled off a win by varying her shots and smashes. Then, Michael and Randy giving all they could, clutched the MD win in 3 games. Even with very sore arms, they went for the attack fiercely, also eliminating the possibilities of hitting out the clears. That paid off and USA team won Macau! Even with the our win, Macau's WD pair were playing their hardest to try to win our WD pair of Danae Long and Sharon Ng. Our women prevailed after a 3 games match. USA won Macau 4-1.

Day 2:

A tough go around in day 2 for the team USA as they lost to team Ukraine 1-3 in the first match of the Quarterfinals, rank 13 out of 20. Having the smallest team, only 4 players, they were all very sore after playing three countries on the first day. Facing a better rest Ukraine team whose draw only need to play two countries. Mixed double pair Michael Buasan and Danae Long lost to Ukraine 14-21, 16-21, then our Men’s Single Randy Ma fighting back strongly from yesterday’s problem adjusting to venue wind drift.  He lost closing of 19-21, and 18-21.  Our Women’s Single  Sharon Ng with sheer determination held on to the end with a nail biting finishing of 3 games, 21-11, 18-21, 23-21.  We knew the men have to win Men’s Double in order for us to continue the team event competition, they fought hard giving everything they had but unfortunately lost with the scores of 10-21, 19-21. At the end we lost to Ukraine 1-3, this concluded our team play.  Ukraine went on and won by beating Canada 3-1.

Starting  July 9th our players will compete in the individual events MX, MS, WS, MD, WD.
