2008 Olympic Games.
2002 Olympic figure skating champion Sarah Hughes has been a busy advocate not only for her own sport but also for the research and awareness of breast cancer, a disease that has touched her family closely. In addition to this, most recently, she has been helping to lead a group that includes New York Rangers star Mark Messier that is attempting to turn a vacant armory in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, N.Y. into the largest skating facility in the U.S.
I first met Sarah and her family at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She is the fourth of six children. I can say there isn’t a nicer and more giving group than the Hughes clan. Sarah’s father was a champion ice hockey player in Canada.
I caught up with Sarah at a fitting place, the Chelsea Piers ice rink in New York City, where she gave me a few pointers before my debut in a figure skating competition for the Ice Theater of New York’s charity benefit. Let’s just say that in skating, I leave something to be desired in the way of skill. I made up for it with enthusiasm and by bringing my own sport of fencing to the ice!
